The Sanchez Sisters
Lola Sanchez was angry. Her town had been invaded by Union soldiers, her father was wrongly accused of spying and imprisoned, and now the Union soldiers had moved into the Sanchez home in Palatka, FL. Lola and her sisters, Francesca (nicknamed “Panchita”) and Eugenia, decided it was time they took revenge. They decided to spy on the Union invaders.
The girls started their spy work by inviting the Union soldiers to evenings of dinner and conversation. The soldiers enjoyed visiting the pretty Sanchez sisters and soon they were bringing guests with them. Some of these guests were high-ranking officers of the Union Army. The soldiers thought the Sanchez sisters were lovely and harmless, so they talked freely about battle plans and troop movements.
On the evening of May 21, 1862, Union soldiers were enjoying a supper served by the Sanchez sisters. The soldiers began discussing a raid that was planned for the next morning. Lola listened closely. She knew this was critical information and she needed to warn the Confederate commander.
Lola consulted with her sisters, and they formed a plan: Panchita and Eugenia would entertain the soldiers and serve supper while Lola took a horse and headed for the Confederate camp. The girls all knew it was a huge risk. It was at least a mile and a half to the camp, with a river to cross. If the soldiers suspected that Lola was missing, there would be questions they could not answer. They might end up in prison with their father, but they decided it was worth the risk.
Lola headed off into the night. She knew that once she reached the end of the forest, she would have to find a way to cross the river to reach the Confederate camp. Luck was with Lola and the ferry was running that night. She convinced the ferryman to watch her horse as she rode the ferry across the river. Once the ferry docked, Lola hiked up her long skirts and ran for the camp. She stopped the first guard she met. He listened but could not leave his post, so he gave Lola his horse and she rode the rest of the way to find Captain Dickison.
As soon as she had told her story and knew that Captain Dickison believed her, Lola mounted the horse and rode back to the Confederate guard. She returned his horse and ran for the ferry. She made it back home on her own horse in just an hour and a half. She smoothed her clothes and went in to laugh and talk with the soldiers as if nothing had ever happened.
That night, Captain Dickison and his soldiers crossed the river and set a trap for the Union gunboat. The Union soldiers never knew what happened. The USS Columbine was set on fire and the Union soldiers were captured. The Sanchez sisters were never suspected and continued their spy work until the end of the war.
After the war, all three of the Sanchez sisters married former Confederate soldiers.
